Old American Flag

I love telling the story about this song because I never would’ve ended up here without it. In 2021, I ran for a local political position and lost the election (I was only 26 at the time). But I had been working really hard on the campaign and my mom wanted to take a girls trip just to recoup and clear my head. I don’t know why but I told her I wanted to see Nashville, it wasn’t too far of a plane ride but just far enough that it felt like a vacation. The moment we set foot here, it felt like home. I joke that Nashville is the city that restores your soul but for me it truly did. I arrived a broken mess of a girl that summer and it’s been a hell of ride to get to where I am today but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

When we visited, we stayed at the Gaylord Opryland Resort. I highly recommend everyone who visits Nash at least visiting the resort for a few hours because it’s absolutely stunning to walk around in the atriums. So one morning, I was walking to Cinnabon to get some breakfast and when I looked up through the glass ceiling, there was a torn & ragged American Flag blowing from atop the atrum dome. In my head, out my mouth “Old american flag, you wave so fiercely. In the wind that blows without direction or speed. You know how hard the road can be. Old american flag, you don’t know how much you mean to me”. I jotted it down via voice memo on June 18, 2021 and I was honored to be able to include it in this first project.

**Side Note—when I was trying to explain the structure of this song to the guys, we concluded it was an Ode. So I lovingly have referred to her as Ode American Flag or Old American Flag (Patriot’s Ode).
